The oldest incorporated town in Washington State, Steilacoom was founded in 1854 as a port town, and was an important trade center in the state's early history. At one time Steiliacoom served as the county seat of Pierce County. Much of Steilacoom's historical charm is retained amid 32 local buildings and sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the state's oldest Catholic Church.
In keeping with the town's historic infrastructure, many Steilacoom homes for sale date back to the early 20th century, and have been beautifully restored with modern home amenities. Home to less than 10,000 residents, Steilacoom real estate also includes a wide selection of new homes and upscale oceanfront properties. Located just north of Fort Lewis Military Reservation and ten miles south of Tacoma, Steilacoom Washington real estate is popular with commuters, as well as those living offshore on Ketron Island, Anderson Island, and McNeil Island, with ferry access to these places located right downtown, enabling passengers and tourists to travel some of the South Sound's most beautiful waters.
