University Place History

Incorporated relatively recently in 1994, University Place is a new city with a rich history. The city's name dates back to the late 1800s, when when the Methodist Church bought a large parcel of land intended for a University. Plans changed and the land was resold, but the name stuck. In 1940, University Place and Tacoma Narrows were made famous by a spectacular bridge failure during a storm. High winds and poor engineering combined for a collapse that was filmed and sent all over the world on newsreels, earning the bridge the nickname "Galloping Gertie." Two bridges now exist and span the Narrows allowing easy access to the Olympic Peninsula. University Place's historic character, beautiful setting, and thriving city center make it one of the more sought after home markets the Puget Sound region.
